About the Board

Statutory Duties

In Michigan, the local Board of Review is an independent body that reviews and corrects property tax assessment rolls prepared by the local assessor. It functions as the first level of appeal for property owners who disagree with their assessment, exemptions, or classifications.

Upcoming Meetings

Appeal Process

March Board of Review:

  • The board holds an organizational meeting in March to receive the assessment roll from the assessor.
  • Later in March, the board holds public hearings to consider assessment appeals.
  • Residential property owners must appeal to the March Board of Review before they can appeal to the Michigan Tax Tribunal.

July and December Boards of Review:

  • These meetings are held for limited purposes, such as correcting qualified errors or granting specific exemptions for the current or preceding year.

Appealing a decision:

  • After the board makes a decision, it sends written notification to the property owner.
  • If a property owner is unsatisfied with the board’s decision, they may be able to file a further appeal with the Michigan Tax Tribunal.
